The Rotja Valley

The road to FUILLA (the Rotja Valley) is a wonderful route and the village itself is divided into 3 parts (lower FUILLA, middle FUILLA and upper FUILLA). The church of Ste Eulalie, built in 1030, is well worth a visit.

Continuing on, you will arrive in SAHORRE (8 km from VILLEFRANCHE), a great place for hikes – there is a beautiful walk to the GOA tower which is classed as historic monument since 1982 – (from this defense tower, the lookouts would light fires to alert the surrounding villages of danger. This type of tower (in Catalan “foc”) can be seen from one end of the region to another.

You can also visit the romanesque church of Saint-Étienne, dating back to the xiie century (already cited in 1163), which is built in superb carved stone. It overlooks the village to the west.
For a slight detour, there is the small village of THORRENT with its beautiful romanesque church of Sainte-Croix – a haven of peace
When you return to SAHORRE, continue on to the small hamlet of PY to begin the ascent to MANTET (16 km from SAHORRE). This village is at the end of wonderful road with scenery that takes your breath away and is a good starting point for some beautiful hikes.
