THINGS TO SEE IN VILLEFRANCHE-DE-CONFLENT

Nestled at the foot of the Canigou mountain, in the heart of the Eastern Pyrenees, this city with its pink marble facades, which was fortified by Vauban, is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Alternately French and Spanish, it feels above all Catalan.

The medieval town with its Romanesque church, its vaulted walkway, twenty or so listed house fronts, the COVA BASTERA cave… A village of 320 inhabitants founded in 1098, listed as one of the “most beautiful villages in France” and as a “Town of Art and History”. A walk out of time, let the dream take you away – a tip, late at night when there is no one left in the streets, it is magical. There are also several creative craftsmen to discover… and a wide choice of restaurants (especially in season)

The LIBERIA castle

Today we present the fabric of VILLEFRANCHE DE CONFLENT. This is the story of a dream come true… Like other heritage, tourist or character towns, the city of VIILEFRANCHE has its own fabric from the prestigious “toiles du soleil” collection.

Hike 1
Chapelle Notre-Dame de Vie (688m) and caves

What could be more exciting than to visit a man-made chapel, completely isolated at high altitude, and a huge cave above it, also equipped with an altar forming another chapel, this one natural and even bigger than the previous one!

On the way up there is a smaller cave. Both caves are absolutely safe. The hike (or walk) takes place on the south-eastern part of the Mont Coronat limestone massif, starting from the Mas de Lastourg campsite. Municipality Serdinya

Start in front of the campsite reception, take the gravelled exit road, cross the Têt bridge and then turn right onto the tarmac road leading from the N116 to the campsite.

Camping Mas de Lastourg > Villefranche-de-Conflent

How to get to Villefranche-de-Conflent from the Mas de Lastourg campsite without taking the dangerous N116, which has no pedestrian traffic planned?

Here is an alternative route along the river Têt! Start in front of the campsite reception, take the gravelled exit road.

Hike 3
Villefranche-de-Conflent > Village des Horts (ruins) (857m)

Short hike in the mountain above Serdinya, starting from Villefranche-de-Conflent, to the fountain of the abandoned ruined village of Les Horts.
This hike follows the old path serving the village “Chemin des Horts à Villefranche”, which was recorded in the Napoleonic cadastre.

The landscape is typical of the Catalan Pyrenees: mountains, yet Mediterranean buildings and vegetation.

The hike begins on the small earthen car park on the right bank of the Têt, opposite the access road to the Mas Lastourg campsite…
